How to Maximize your Internship Search

Updated: Oct 21, 2019

The TU Music Business Club will do it's best to connect you to the right opportunities in the recording industry and music business, however, it what you put into your job search is what you'll get out of it. There are no guarantees in this business. With that said, here are my tips for landing that perfect internship.

Getting a foot in the door

  • Check LinkedIn daily for new job posts. Music internships pop up here and there and many people wouldn't think to look here. Another good place to find internships is called EntertainmentCareers.net .

  • Figure out if there are mutual connections on LinkedIn at the specific company you'd like to work with; whether it is a DSP like Spotify, a talent management group, or a record label. You never know what mutual connections might be able to introduce you to a key decision maker.

  • Drop a line in local studios email or their contact page. Smaller studios are more likely to answer and be in need of interns when the seasons are changing.

  • Put yourself our there by attending live gigs, music conferences, and other events where you can meet industry professionals. The more you build your network, the higher your chances of finding a position.

The Interview

  • If you apply somewhere and are accepted for an interview, come ready with your cover letter written and a letter of recommendation from a professor who you have a strong relationship with - if you don't yet have a good relationship with a professor, it's never too late to cultivate one. Let them distill their years of experience during a few office hour sessions!

  • Gauge whether or not you'll need to dress formal for an interview. Many places in the music industry are a come as you are type of work environment, less buttoned up than other industries.

  • There is an art to following up without being pushy. You can say something like "Hello, I'm just circling back to see where you are at with the hiring process. Thank you for your consideration for the position of X!"
